Fabric Paintings

Jacqueline Stojanović

26.05.2023 - 24.06.2023

Fabric Paintings presents a new series of works by Jacqueline Stojanović marking the artist’s first solo exhibition at Haydens in Melbourne. Conceived in 2022 during a two-month residency at Lottozero Textile Laboratory in Prato, Italy, the exhibition interprets traditional western modes of display through the artist’s free association and foundational weaving practice.

Presented as Fabric Paintings are a group of diptychs and triptychs woven from a collection of Italian crossword puzzle patterns purchased from newsstands in Prato, with which Stojanović has interpreted as weaving drafts for her countermarch loom while in residence. Playing with the hierarchical histories of diptych and triptych painting, and the parameters of ‘general’ knowledge distributed through such national puzzle books, the Fabric Paintings combine the artist’s handwoven cloth and industrial machine woven linens to mingle and find balance upon their stretchers; through their values in colour, form, production means, and technical history.

The Fabric Paintings foreground a mural environment, with colour dividing, blocking and filling the walls of the gallery and their borders. The mural acts as a frame for the works, while referencing the context in which they were created, however stylistically Stojanović brings to the mural her own associations from domestic wall painting in Serbia and Eastern Europe. With Fabric Paintings Stojanović continues her exploration in the field of expanded textiles, while playfully furthering her inquiry into the social and cultural shifts in values that map her personal time and place.

Jacqueline Stojanović (b. 1992, Australia) is based in Melbourne, and completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at Monash University in 2014, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (First Class Honours) at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2015. She is a visual artist engaged with an expanded textile practice that considers histories of the handmade through the processes of weaving, drawing, and installation. Taking the position that weaving is an ancient carrier of culture, Stojanović explores past and present personal cultural narratives, adopting the language of abstraction and approaching weaving through an open use of materials from the industrial to the domestic.
